History[]

Background[]

After her father was caught cheating, her parents separated, leading Syd and her brother to move to Miami with their mother. Syd and her brother grew up with the absence of their father, which resulted in a strained relationship with her father until recently.

Career as a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent[]

In Miami, Syd begin visiting her older brother Marcus and his family at a barbecue at his home and was reunited with her boyfriend from New York, Marcus's partner Mike Lowrey. Mike is reluctant to reveal to Marcus about their relationship and tries to prevent Syd from telling him. During the barbecue, Syd reveals that she'll be staying in town for a couple of days and immediately leaves the barbecue to go meet with someone (which is to go begin her undercover operation with the DEA). She tells Mike that it is nice to see him. This makes Marcus confused as he thought she was going to stay with him and the family.

Syd begins her undercover work in Miami as a money laundering associate for the Russian Mafia lead by Alexei and Josef Kuninskavich operating the drug trade between themselves and Cuban drug lord Hector Juan Carlos "Johnny" Tapia. After laundering the large sum of money to be delivered at a drop point with Tapia's associate Carlos. Syd leaves with her fellow DEA agent in an SUV to the top of a parking garage for the drop point. Unknown to her a Haitian Zoe Pound gang lead by Blondie Dread follows her to the drop point so they can hijack the money for themselves.

As Syd and her partner wait at the drop, a Zoe Pound gang member approaches the vehicle and shoots her partner in the ear and pulls him out in attempt to carjack the truck. Syd shoots and kills him (using her gun for the first time) before closing the door and beginning to speed off out of the parking garage where she knocks two of the Haitians who were hanging on the driver and passenger side windows (one knocked into a car, the other whose arm is stuck in the window falling to his death) and drives out the parking garage with the Zoe Pounders in pursuit leading to a car chase.

Marcus and Mike working on a tip from an informant had been following the Zoe Pounders when they made their move and upon discovering Syd stumble into the action to rescue her with Syd's fellow DEA associates trying to save her as well. Syd's chase leads to her being trapped in an intersection when she crashes into a car. The Miami police and DEA agents engage in a shootout with the Haitians as Syd tries to escape. Syd kills another Haitian with a shotgun and manages to break free from the crash with Blondie Dread and his men hijacking another Semi car-carrier truck to chase after her.

The chase leads to a freeway on the MacArthur Causeway where the Haitians attempt to slow down the police and Marcus and Mike by throwing the chained linked cars at them with Marcus and Mike dodging them and the police cars suffering damage by crashing into them. Syd's fellow DEA agents also assist in the chase which ends with a boat being destroyed.

Syd drives her SUV to a nearby dock at a backup drop point for Tapia and calls her associate to let them know that she lost the Haitians who had already escaped. Marcus and Mike catch up to Syd and Marcus becomes angry at Syd for not telling him that she was an undercover DEA agent especially after visiting him at his home in his backyard. He threatens to tell their mother about what she did and walks away hurt. Mike compliments Syd for defending herself very well against the Haitians and Syd tells him it's too bad Marcus didn't notice it. When Tapia's men arrives to get the money, Syd realizes the drop is done and leaves after thanking Mike.

Syd later has the DEA refocus the investigation to towards Tapia who is now in control of the drug trade in Miami after eliminating the Russians and has begun to woo her as she was a former associate of them. Syd meets Tapia at the beach where he proposes they do a partnership in her money laundering. Marcus later learns about Syd meeting with Tapia thanks to help from his fellow detectives Marco Vargas and Mateo Reyes who had put wiretaps on Tapia's phone. Syd later goes with Marcus and Mike to follow the Dixie 7 boat that Tapia launders his money and drugs in caskets for. Syd later leaves Marcus and Mike to do their pursuit of the mortuary van as she does not want to blow her cover.

When the time came to bring down Tapia, Syd attempts to woo him in an attempt to bring him in. Carlos however informs Tapia that he has discovered that Marcus and Mike are not gang bangers but policemen and they weren't trying to hijack the load but looking after Syd. Tapia returns to Syd and uncovers her identity as a DEA agent before holding her at gunpoint and asking to reveal her wire. Syd's DEA associates discovered this and attempt to rescue her. Tapia and Carlos kidnap Syd and take her to his private jet for Cuba. While on the plane, Tapia calls Marcus and demands the return of his drug money in 48 hours in exchange for Syd's life.

While Syd is held in a room at Tapia's compound. Marcus and Mike plan a military assault to rescue Syd with help from their fellow Miami PD's TNT team, Syd's DEA co-workers and Captain Howard's contacts at the CIA. They also get help from Vargas' brother Tito who is the head of the Alpha 66 underground tunnel network. The assault begins with a remote controlled car exploding, killing some guards who were playing soccer and destroying a security tower with a rocket launcher. A large scale shootout ensues as Marcus and Mike enter the house and rescue Syd while killing some of Tapia's henchmen. Syd later takes Mike's sidearm in an attempt to defend herself from Tapia's bodyguards. The three escape in a Hummer H2 joined by Tito as Tapia has called the Cuban military to assist in defending his compound. Tapia's compound later explodes and is destroyed much to his fury, he and Carlos go in another car in pursuit of Mike, Marcus, Syd and Tito.

The chase leads all the way to the U.S. Naval station Guantanamo Bay. Both vehicles breakthrough a barbed wire fence where they enter a live minefield. With only a couple of rounds remaining in their weapons, Mike shoots at Tapia twice but loses his last two rounds while Syd and Marcus attempt to convince the military that they are Americans and to shoot at the Cubans rather than them. Carlos holds them at gunpoint and demands that they surrender their weapons. Syd tosses her gun at Carlos which hits a landmine that flies in his face and blows him backwards killing him while Marcus with his last bullet shoots Tapia in the head while the latter holds Mike at gunpoint causing him to fall to the ground which explodes his body in half after landing on the landmine. Mike praises his partner for saving him and walks toward Syd while being careful going around the landmines as he tells her that he came to Cuba for this and kisses her with her kissing him back. Marcus tries to persuade them that its dangerous to kiss around the landmines and asks the military personnel to tell him that its dangerous as they continue to kiss.

Back in Miami, Syd spends another barbecue with Marcus and his family and Marcus finally makes peace with Mike dating Syd.

Tracking Gabriel Knox[]

Years after taking down Tapia's drug cartel, Syd worked as a well respected DEA agent, who was involved on a major case involving the elusive crime boss Gabriel Knox, along with her then-lover and DEA colleague, Warren Hendrix. Working deep undercover as Nina, she infiltrated the crime organization and was working her way to unmask Knox. During one of their operations in an attempt to meet the crime boss, an associate of Knox, Kobi Brunson, changes the plan leading Syd to get into a car with them which resulted into her getting kidnapped, tortured, shot and left for dead. Luckily, she survives and wakes up in a hospital only to find herself not only bruised and scarred, but having lost her child with Warren.

After the incident, her undercover identity Nina is said to have died and Syd decides to transfer to the LAPD as a Special Agent/Detective Lieutenant, where she meets and partner's up with Nancy McKenna. Syd would continue her hunt to find Gabriel Knox, as she received intel that he was setting up shop and expanding in LA.

Personality[]

Syd plays the 'bad cop' in her partnership with Nancy. She tends to break the rules as a means to get things done, and is not afraid to do when necessary.

After the tragic incident in Miami, she becomes emotionally distant in her romantic life, always making it clear that she wants no strings attached with her affairs. She emphasizes this by forcing to-go coffee cups for her affairs the following morning, to ensure they don't stick around.

Moreover, with the absence of her father, Joseph Vaughn, during her upbringing, she grows resentment towards her father, developing daddy issues. Throughout her search for Knox, she has relied on her dad for intel, leading them to slowly mend their relationship and Syd to realize the misunderstandings and how much her father cared for her. Despite being coldhearted towards her father, Syd ultimately just wanted to be loved and cared for by him.
